Peter Darling.png

Ten years ago, Peter Pan left Neverland to grow up, leaving behind his adolescent dreams of boyhood and resigning himself to life as Wendy Darling. Growing up, however, has only made him realize how inescapable his identity as a man is.

But when he returns to Neverland, everything has changed: the Lost Boys have become men, and the war games they once played are now real and deadly. Even more shocking is the attraction Peter never knew he could feel for his old rival, Captain Hook—and the realization that he no longer knows which of them is the real villain.

WHEN DIMPLE MET RISHI

A laugh-out-loud, heartfelt YA romantic comedy, told in alternating perspectives, about two Indian-American teens whose parents have arranged for them to be married.

Dimple Shah has it all figured out. With graduation behind her, she’s more than ready for a break from her family, from Mamma’s inexplicable obsession with her finding the “Ideal Indian Husband.” Ugh. Dimple knows they must respect her principles on some level, though. If they truly believed she needed a husband right now, they wouldn’t have paid for her to attend a summer program for aspiring web developers…right?

Rishi Patel is a hopeless romantic. So when his parents tell him that his future wife will be attending the same summer program as him—wherein he’ll have to woo her—he’s totally on board. Because as silly as it sounds to most people in his life, Rishi wants to be arranged, believes in the power of tradition, stability, and being a part of something much bigger than himself.

The Shahs and Patels didn’t mean to start turning the wheels on this “suggested arrangement” so early in their children’s lives, but when they noticed them both gravitate toward the same summer program, they figured, Why not?

Dimple and Rishi may think they have each other figured out. But when opposites clash, love works hard to prove itself in the most unexpected ways.

“The Paths We Choose” – M. Hollis || Review

goodreads || amazon

the paths we chooseLily Ferrari enjoys having control over every detail of her life. Ever since she left her parents’ house to gain her freedom, she decided to fully own her autonomy. But an unexpected visit from her little brother may change the path she chooses to follow.

Add to that a casual fling with the bright architect Mayte González, and Lily’s summer is turning out more interesting than she expected. It certainly beats the routine of working extra shifts at Johnson’s Bookstore.

A few weeks before her college life begins, Lily needs to figure out if she’s wrong about the past or if she should continue to protect her heart at all costs.

Sometimes moving forward is only possible if you have the right people by your side.

~the backstory~

I read M. Hollis’ THE MELODY OF  YOU AND ME earlier this year and I loved it! It was such a cute, fluffy sapphic romance. So, when I found out about THE PATHS WE CHOOSE I couldn’t contain my excitement!

~the overall opinion~

I bought this when it came out but just got around to reading in at the end of May… and I read it in one sitting. No joke. I know these novellas are short but this story was just so addictive. I stayed up until nearly 2am to finish it. I just needed more, more, more.

~the characters~

Our main character is Lily, who I loved so much. She’s a biracial Brazilian, with pink hair, a short temper and a bad relationship with her family. I loved how this story dealt with blood family not needing to be your real family. That title is earned, even for parents and siblings. It was nice to see her again and be in her head, I loved what we saw of her in THE MELODY OF YOU AND ME.

Another character I loved in the first book and was so glad we got to see more of was Mayte, a black-Cuban bisexual girl. She’s so nice and sweet and bubbly. She’s so understanding and positive and perfect for Lily. I loved watching things grow between the two of them.

The cameos of Josie and Chris made my heart swell. Those two are the cutest, most adorable couple ever. I also loved meeting Lily’s roommates too, Hope, Karen and Anika, who were all so amazing and supportive. I cannot wait for the next novella in the series which is going to Karen’s story! (Am I the only one who ships her and Hope? Yeah? No?)

~the plot and setting~

Naturally, with this being a New Adult romance, the main plot is the growing romantic relationship between Lily and Mayte. I honestly was so on edge through this. Especially near the end, I was honestly fearing things wouldn’t work out as I had hoped but I should have known better! Maria Hollis knows how to write fluff. And that is something all f/f romance needs – countless fluff!

It was so great to be back in Lillac. Honestly. I want to move there with all these cute, queer girls roaming around, falling in love in bookstores and shit like that. It’s my dream come true.

As I mentioned before, I adored how serious things such as family, homophobia, racism, self esteem issues were dealt with so realistically and simply.

Also, I was literally in tears at a certain scene where they’re talking to Hope at a party because it just hit so close to home for me. Seriously, it was like I was the one at the party. Tears of joy from having my experience written down was just… incredible. I’ve yet to read it in any other YA/NA novel!

~the final thoughts~

Everyone needs to read this. It’s cute, sexy, deep, amazing, fluffy, wonderful. It talks about such serious things in such a non-serious way. Like most of us do. The romance is sweet, the characters wonderful and the story just incredible! Pick it up!

“The Edge of the Abyss” – Emily Skrutskie || Review

goodreads || amazon || book depo || wordery

the edge of the abyssThree weeks have passed since Cassandra Leung pledged her allegiance to ruthless pirate-queen Santa Elena and set free Bao, the sea monster Reckoner she’d been forced to train.

The days as a pirate trainee are long and grueling, but it’s not the physical pain that Cas dreads most. It’s being forced to work with Swift, the pirate girl who broke her heart.

But Cas has even bigger problems when she discovers Boa is not the only a monster swimming free. Other Reckoners illegally sold to pirates have escaped their captors and are taking the NeoPacific by storm, attacking ships at random and ruining the ocean ecosystem.

As a Reckoner trainer, Cas might be the only one who can stop them. But how can she take up arms against the creatures she used to care for and protect? Will Cas embrace the murky morals that life as a pirate brings or perish in the dark waters of the NeoPacific?

The exciting sequel to THE ABYSS SURROUNDS US.

★.5

~the backstory~

WARNING: SPOILERS FOR THE ABYSS SURROUNDS US. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.

I got this through NetGalley in exchange in exchange of an honest review.

I read and adored the first book THE ABYSS SURROUNDS US last year, so when I saw that THE EDGE OF THE ABYSS was up on NetGalley, I had to request it. You can probably imagine how loud I screamed when I got approved for it.

~the overall opinion~

This was such a strong sequel and ending. I honestly think that helped me get out of my reading slump. It was so action packed and had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Like THE ABYSS SURROUNDS US we’re thrust straight into action and it doesn’t let up until the end.

~the characters~

As with the first book, this is told entirely in our MC’s POV. Cas has changed and grown so much since we first met her in THE ABYSS SURROUNDS US. Her struggles were so real and understandable – I love how Emily Skrutskie always hits the nail on the head with Cas’ situation. In book one, it was how her relationship with Swift wasn’t equal. In this, it’s coming to terms with herself and her feelings after learning just what role played in Durga’s death. There were so many times I was just cheering because how brutally honest this story was.

We also have Swift, Cas’ love interest and my favourite character. I don’t know if it’s just because I see so much of myself in her. I love the different side we see to her in this book – the hungry, desperate side. The character development was incredible for everyone.

There’s also Chuck, Varma and Lemon, who I wish we saw more of. No word of a lie, I would read a spinoff about these three. Especially Chuck and Varma because I want to see more of their relationship!

Santa Elena. Oh my God. I love to hate this woman. There are times I love her, times I hate her, times I want to be here, times I want to kill her. I think she’s my second favourite character just because of how fleshed out and wonderfully complex and brutal she is.

I also loved the inclusion of Cas’ family again. We still don’t see much of them but it was nice for her to have that reconnecting moment. I was kind of worried she would never get it when I first started this book and I AM SO FREAKING HAPPY WITH HOW EVERYTHING PLANNED OUT.

~the plot and setting~

This book gave me all the Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End feelings. No word of a lie. If Pirates of the Caribbean took place in a sci-fi futuristic setting instead of the 17th century, I swear, it would be this book.

As I mentioned earlier, this book is so action packed and fast paced. I loved every twist and turn. I would tell myself just one more chapter and it would end in such a way that I needed to have another one and another one.

I don’t want to go into too much details because the two things that made me so! Freaking! Happy! are very spoilery. And I want you all to be as shocked and excited as I was when I read them. But holy shit, this entire thing delighted me so much.

I also felt like this stakes were much higher in this book, which provided much more tension whilst reading. I had no idea what was going to happen next. The first one was a bit more predictable but this one? This one gave kept me second guessing and questioning everything.

Once again, I love the world of this duology. I love how it’s similar enough to our own, but different enough to make everything seem plausible. I sometimes feel like setting is something I don’t notice a lot (probably because I suck at writing it so much) but this world was something I adored. I would actually love a graphic novel spinoff about Cas and Swift’s adventures afterwards.

~the final thoughts~

I recommend this duology completely. Sapphic romance with pirates, sea monsters, a biracial main character, kickass friendships and nail biting action? What more could you want?

“Tiny Pretty Things” – Sona Charaipotra & Dhonielle Clayton || Review

Tiny Pretty ThingsGigi, Bette, and June, three top students at an exclusive Manhattan ballet school, have seen their fair share of drama.

Free-spirited new girl Gigi just wants to dance—but the very act might kill her.

Privileged New Yorker Bette’s desire to escape the shadow of her ballet star sister brings out a dangerous edge in her.

And perfectionist June needs to land a lead role this year or her controlling mother will put an end to her dancing dreams forever.

When every dancer is both friend and foe, the girls will sacrifice, manipulate, and backstab to be the best of the best.

★★★★★

~the backstory~

I remember seeing Taryn live-tweeting this when she was reading it. It sounded so interesting! A book about ballet that was dark and twisted and full of deceit and lies. I was in. I immediately went and bought the ebook, even though it was more expensive than I tend to spend on ebooks. I needed to own it.

~the overall opinion~

Now, if you follow me on Goodreads, or even if you just look at my shelves, you’ll see that this book took me ages to finish. I started it on February 12th 2017 and didn’t finish it until March 31st 2017 – well, it was 1am on March 31st, so technically, the 30th in my head.

But yeah. It took me a while. Over a month! You’re probably thinking to yourself “Charlotte, how can a book you took so long to finish be rated five stars? Surely that deserves a half or a quarter star knocked off!” and I can understand! Generally, books that take me ages to finish are books I don’t enjoy.

This book, however? So many things factored into this book taking me ages! My depression was acting up, I was in a bit of a slump, it was on my Kindle and I have a hard time making myself pick that up, and lastly, it deals with some heavy subjects that makes reading a lot in one go hard. Especially when fighting your own mental illness.

That’s the only reason.

This book is so wonderful and I cannot wait to get to the sequel “SHINY BROKEN PIECES“!

~the characters~

We have three main POVS, all of them students at a prestegious school of ballet. Technically four if you include the POV of Cassie in the prologue.

First there’s Gigi. She’s the only black student at this school. But she’s the best. She lands the much sought after role of the Sugar Plum Fairy in their performance of The Nutcracker. She’s new. She’s black. She has no friends. And she’s got a heart condition that makes her dancing potentially deadly. Despite all of that, she’s one of the sweetest characters ever. I love her growth throughout the novel and I cannot wait to see happens in book two! I just want to wrap her in a blanket and hiss at anyone who tries to mess with her.

There’s also Bette. She used to be the golden girl before Gigi came along. She’s white, blonde, tiny, perfect. She’s rich, her mother investing a lot of money in the school, offering her a lot of sway. She doesn’t like losing her position and will do anything to get it back. Bette is one of those characters you love to hate. You can sympathise with her and her situation; you want to hug her, if you know she wouldn’t claw your eyes out for trying. After that ending, I’m especially curious to see how she fares in SHINY BROKEN PIECES. I also am routing for her kicking her drug addiction. Like please.

And the last POV is June. She is a biracial Korean dancer who used to be kind of popular but isn’t anymore. June is always second best, always passed over for someone else who appears “better”. I think a lot of us could relate to June the most. She’s constantly trying to improve herself with her skill and her weight and figure. All the while trying to figure out about who her father is. I want her to get there. I want people to realise how good she is, but I’m also pissed at her because of the bad things she does. Also, like Bette, I want her to defeat her eating disorder in book two.

Every single character is this book is cutthroat. As you delve further into the book, you realise that you can’t really trust anyone. You can’t hate them, but you can’t like them either. They all want to be the next superstar and nothing is going to get in their way.

I also adored the side characters such as Alec, Will, Henri and the teachers of the school. Though, I don’t trust any of the boys (Alec especially!)

~the plot and setting~

The plot of this book is so freaking good!

It’s a bit of a mystery. A whodunnit.

It’s a very character driven book, which is my fave thing for a book to be, to be honest. I adore books that are all about character development at heart. And this was definitely about its characters. I loved being inside all three of their heads, even if that wasn’t a pleasant place to be most of the time.

My heart was in my throat every chapter, trying to guess what was going to happen and who was in the firing line. Talking about what happens is a bit spoilery, so I won’t go into detail but holy hell is this amazing!

I also loved the descriptions of the ballet. I could picture it all in my head. It was enough to reignite my love for ballet and even made me watch The Nutcracker and Swan Lake because I missed it so much.

~the final thoughts~

If you’re expecting supportive girl friendships, then this isn’t the book for you. This is a dark, twisted tale of the competitve ballet industry. It’s like an even darker, more realistic version of Black Swan.

I recommend this book wholly. I adored every second, no matter how dark it got, and I cannot wait for the second book to get here so I can get back into this world asap!

Beware for triggers on: drug abuse, eating disorders and bullying.

“We Are Okay” – Nina Lacour || Review

We Are Okay

You go through life thinking there’s so much you need…

Until you leave with only your phone, your wallet, and a picture of your mother.

Marin hasn’t spoken to anyone from her old life since the day she left everything behind. No one knows the truth about those final weeks. Not even her best friend, Mabel. But even thousands of miles away from the California coast, at college in New York, Marin still feels the pull of the life and tragedy she’s tried to outrun. Now, months later, alone in an emptied dorm for winter break, Marin waits. Mabel is coming to visit, and Marin will be forced to face everything that’s been left unsaid and finally confront the loneliness that has made a home in her heart.

We Are Okay” by Nina Lacour – ★★★★★

~the backstory~

I hadn’t heard much about this story before I clicked preorder. I knew about Nina Lacour, obviously. EVERYTHING LEADS TO YOU is still very high up on my TBR (even higher now that I’ve finished this book) but I had heard nothing about WE ARE OKAY until someone retweeted it onto my timeline. I saw the cover, saw it was by Nina Lacour, and immediately clicked preorder. I had never read a thing by Nina before this but she’s pretty much an autobuy because hey! Queer girls!

~the overall opinion~

I’ve been in such a reading slump for a while now but one night, I just picked this book up before I went to bed and fell in love. I was at 50% before I knew where I was. I only stopped because it was midnight and I needed sleep.

It sat for a few days before I was adamant to finish it and picked it up before work. I didn’t get it finished then but it was the first thing I did when I got home.

And I cried.

The ending, oh my God, that ending was beautiful. In fact, the entire thing was beautiful. That’s the only thing I can saya for it. It was just breathtakingly beautiful.

~the characters~

Our main character, Marin, lost her grandfather and, in her grief, took off to New York without saying a single thing or taking anything. Everything is told in her POV – the present when her best friend, Mabel, is coming to visit – to the past, in the months leading up to Gramps’ death.

She was so bloody real. Being inside her head was so painful and wonderful. Every raw emotion she had about loss and grief and heartache, I felt deep in my heart and soul. I was crying with her and when she felt the glimmer of hope, I couldn’t help but feel it too.

She’s flawed, selfish in her grief – hell, she ignored her friend’s 900 messages and phonecalls! It was wonderful to read a character that was so lost and down, but that had a happy ending – that you were rooting for. She was just so real.

And Mabel. You can’t help but love her because Marin loves her. She’s flawed too. She holds everything against Marin – the taking off without a word, the not returning phonecalls – she is angry at Marin for all of that. She doesn’t just understand her and accept. She pushes in a way that’s sometimes too much for Marin.

That was another thing I adored – seeing that sometimes, you can do everything with the right intention but it doesn’t work. You’ve just got to keep trying, though, if you really want to achieve what you’ve set out to go – especially if it’s pulling a friend back into your life.

Marin’s parents, Ana and Javier are also incredible. They’re so supportive and there for Marin and it’s wonderful to see YA with loving, supportive parents. They’re so wonderful to Marin and Mabel and just incredible. Okay? I love them so much.

And Gramps. I feel about him like Marin feels about him. No spoilers but oh my God.

~the plot and setting~

Everything about this book is very character driven. It’s about overcoming loss and grief and getting back to yourself after facing those heartaches. It’s so wonderful and painful. And hopeful and lovely.

It was the perfect balance of negative and positive.

Marin is learing to cope after losing her grandfather, having already lost her mother and is unable to remember her. Her father isn’t in the picture. The only family she has is Gramps.

I can’t really talk about the plot without giving too much away. The main plot of this is spoiler-y and I don’t want to ruin it. Because when it came out I was staring at the book with my mouth wide open like holy shit!

There’s also some lovely subplot of two girls figuring out their sexuality together. It’s never stated in the book but I see Marin as a lesbian and Mabel as bisexual. It was great to see a story about coming to terms with sexuality without it being the sole plot of the novel.

~the final thoughts~

Everyone needs to read this.

That is all I can say. This was such a beautiful, heartbreaking novel. I think it’s so necessary to show how there’s no right or wrong way to deal with things. And how important friendship and love is.

Everything is just… beautiful! I know I’ve said it before but there’s no other word for it!

Please read it.
